"March Madness"---Huskies Win Gold!!

The Haldimand Huskies Major Bantam Girls Rep team participated in the local Hamilton Wildcats tournament during the March Break and came away as Gold Champions!! The local girls were 4-0 for the tournament, which saw them tipoff against the host team Hamilton Wildcats, Scarborough Blues and Welland Warriors.

The action began on the Friday night as the Huskies faced the Wildcats and what began as a slow 1st half was quickly turned around with an explosive 2nd half as the girls came away with a convincing 32-15 win. The girls executed some fine passing and cuts to the basket enabling 7 Huskies to score. Leading all players was Emily Gill with 15 pts, followed by Sadie Martin, Kelsey Toner and Alex Walewski each with 4 and Nicole Shea and Alexis Poirier each netting 2pts.

Saturday morning the girls would rise and shine to the opposition of the Scarborough Blues team. A great defensive game allowed the girls to keep the score low and hold their opponents to 7 pts in the first half. They would change up the strategy from a zone pressure to a tough man to man, wherein nothing was sinking for the “Blues”. This time it was Kelsey Toner who brought her game and went strong to the hoop for 12 pts, followed closely by teammate Alexis Poirier with 8 pts. Olivia Athanasoius and E. Gill each added 5 pts, Shayla Cole netted 4pts and Krista Vanderzanden and N.Shea each added in a single bucket! Defensively, Sadie Martin led the Huskies “Blue pressure”, alongside Morgan Hopkins on the wing and Leigha McCoppen underneath alongside their teammates to shutdown the Scarborough gals.

This would take the Huskies to their next opponent the Welland Warriors. Again the local girls dominated, coming away with a 25-6 win which saw great teamwork, strategic passing and effective defensive work by all. K. Toner led her team with 12 pts, while E.Gill added in 5pts, Shayla hit for 4 pts and N. Shea, A. Poirier and L. McCoppen combined for 5 pts.

This would set the stage for the Championship game which would have the Huskies match up against the Scarborough Blues once again. The “Blues” would come out strong with an upbeat, quick paced game from tipoff time. With only 9 Huskies on the bench and a couple of girls in foul trouble late in the first half, teamwork was the ‘name of the game’. The Haldimand Huskies settled into a tight 2-1-2 zone defense which made it tough for their opponents to establish any inside game. They worked hard to control the defensive boards, not allowing their opponents that ‘2nd shot’. Both point guards, Alexis Poirier and Sadie Martin were instrumental in leading the offence. Alexis led her team with 10pts, and Sadie added in 6 pts. The local girls led at half 24-20, but that would evaporate quickly in the second half. The Toronto girls were on the attack once again, and consequently the Huskies found themselves falling behind. However, with a full court press and quick hands and feet from all Huskies on the floor, the girls were able to get a few key baskets themselves and take the lead once again, setting their sites on the gold! They would continue to work hard, lots of line changes and everyone playing a key role. E. Gill hit for 7 pts, S. Martin, L. McCoppen and K. Toner added in 6 pts each while N. Shea, S. Cole and M. Hopkins each added 2pts. The teamwork and desire of the Huskies to win the gold gave them the edge as they came away victorious with a 41-34 win, and their first ever Championship title and gold medal! Great job girls!!

Haldimand Huskies 'on the road again'

The Haldimand Huskies Boys Rep Team traveled to the Paul Mitchell tournament in Brantford on Jan. 31st. The team played Niagara Falls for their first game. The Huskies defensively were very strong, but with Niagara Falls amazing ability to sink the ball from anywhere, the Huskies unfortunately lost. Their second game against the Flamboro Fires found the Huskies winning the game at half time by 14 points. The boys however lost their fire and the Huskies went down in flames against the team with the same name. Victory however was finally found when the team won an exciting game against the Kitchener Eagles. The Huskies led the scoring the entire game, however only by a couple of baskets. This intense game was fast paced and exciting right up to the last minute of play. Nick Baronaitis was outstanding in this game. His rebounding ability is astonishing, and with the help of Jesse Dass, these boys and the rest of their line, Jason Huitema, Lucas DeSantis, and Ben Smith helped to lead the Huskies to victory. The entire team played exceptionally well!

The Huskies next tournament is in Waterdown on February 21st.

Huskies “Put Out” Fire

The Haldimand Huskies Major Bantam Rep Girls basketball team came away with a big win this past week as they matched up against the Flamborough Fire and doused their opposition with a 34-14 win! The Huskie girls came out strong and took a commanding lead early in the first half, leaving the Fire with only two points on the board at half time. Much credit must be given to the total team effort displayed with a great defensive effort, quick feet and aggressive strong play which led the offensive attack. Leading all scorers was Kelsey Toner with 13 pts, followed by Alexis Poirier with 8 and Alex Walewski with 6 pts. Emily Gill and Olivia Athanasiou each netted 3 pts while Sadie Martin added in a bucket. Again, defensively the local girls kept the ball on the perimeter, with great pressure from Sadie Martin at the top, and help on the wings from Nicole Shea, Shayla Cole, Krista Vanderzanden and Morgan Hopkins. Denying the Fire of any ‘inside game’ were Leigha McCoppen, K. Toner, A. Walewski and O.Athanasiou with some key steals and aggressive play. Alexis Poirier ripped the ball away from her opponent to add to her point total late in the game. The victory was sealed with a final score of 34-14 for the Haldimand Huskies Major Bantam Rep Girls basketball team. They now head back to the gym in preparation for their next outing which sees them in action in the Niagara Falls Red Raiders local tournament.

HUSKIES ON THE ROAD --Girls Basketball

The Haldimand Huskies Major Bantam Girls basketball team kicked off the New Year this past weekend by participating in the Brantford CYO tournament, and came away with one win and two losses.

The first game saw the Huskies tip off against their Hamilton rivals, Blessed Sacrament. It was a series of unfortunate events as the girls managed to put up a number of shots but failed to put points on the board. At half the Yellow Jackets from Hamilton, led 16-10 and eventually went on to take the win with a 27-18 score. Scoring for the Huskies were Sadie Martin for 4pts, Emily Gill 4pts, Kelsey Toner 4 pts, and Olivia Athanasiou, Alex Walewski and Leigha McCoppen each netting 2 pts.

Saturday morning proved to be a much better outing as the girls rose to the occasion as they matched up against the host team Brantford CYO. There was lots of enthusiasm on the Huskies bench as they started out strong and never looked back. They led the whole game and were able to hold off their opponents in the final minutes to savour a 32-25 victory! Tough defence and strong drives to the basket inspired the Huskies. Shayla Cole, Krista Vanderzanden along with point guard Sadie Martin slowed down the offensive attack of the CYO girls. Rookie teammate Nicole Shea netted a key 2 pts early in the game to keep the offensive attack alive! Emily Gill added in 12 pts, Kelsey Toner hit for 7, Alex Walewski 5pts and Leigha McCoppen, Morgan Hopkins and Olivia Athanasiou netting 2 pts each.

The late game on Saturday had the Huskies tip off against the ABC Magic of Ancaster. The Huskies played with lots of determination and heart as they were matched up against AAA team, of which our local girls are ranked AA. In a hard fought game, the Huskies netted 32 points, but not enough to outscore their opponents who put up 60 pts. Nonetheless, there were memorable moments as Krista V. drove hard to the basket late in the 3rd to keep up the momentum and earn her 2pts. Emily Gill hit for 3 pts late in the game; Sadie Martin played a strong game and added in 6 pts; Kelsey and Alex worked the boards and hit for 7 and 9 pts respectively. Morgan, Shayla, Nicole, Olivia and Leigha added in a strong effort to round out the defence for the Huskies. The Huskies finished the tournament with a 1 and 2 record and left their opponents with some battle wounds as they ended a tough weekend of basketball.

Great job girls!

HALDIMAND HUSKIES BOYS REP TEAM WINS TOURNAMENT

The Haldimand Huskies Major Bantam Boys Rep Team won the Fergus mini Basketball Tournament on January 17th. The entire team played exceptionally well winning all three games against the The Barrie Royals, The Flamboro Fires and the hosting team The C.W. Celtics.

Nick Baronaitis, Lucas DeSantis and Jesse Dass were leading scorers in the games. Ben Smith, played a great defensive game along with Brent Murphy and Tyler Hewitt. Jason Huitema was great at point guard. Austin Hill aka 'The Wall' was a strong force in front of the net, and along with Chris Cotterill, John Huitema, Jordan McKinnon and Nathan Martin the opposing teams certainly had a fight on their hands the entire games just to keep the ball out of their end.

The Huskies travel to Brantford this weekend for their next tournament.
